Menthe Tambli / Fenugreek seeds Thambuli Recipe Type 2

Menthe thambli is a South Indian yoghurt based side dish that is usually eaten along with piping hot steamed rice. Menthe Tambli recipe is nothing but the South Indian version of a soup. It is obvious that any dish prepared using fenugreek tends to be slightly bitter in taste as the seeds itself are bitter. It is a diabetic friendly dish since fenugreek seeds monitor sugar control and stimulates insulin level. I have already posted one version of menthe thambuli recipe where in we soak and then grind the fenugreek seeds but here, in this recipe, we fry the seeds first, and then grind it. So, if at all you forget to soak the seeds, then you can adopt this recipe. In short, fenugreek seeds have amazing health benefits that could transform your health and change the life for the better. Even though the medicinal effects are same in both the methods, the taste has a variation.

How To Prepare Menthe Thambuli.

The time taken to prepare this dish is 15 minutes and the quantity mentioned here is enough for 4 servings

Menthe Thambuli Ingredients.


  • Fenugreek seeds - 2 tsp.
  • Red chillis - 4.
  • Peppercorns- 3.
  • Jeera seeds (  Cumin seeds ) - 1 tsp
  • Salt - as required.
  • Buttermilk ( yogurt ) - 1 cup.
  • Asafotida - 1 pinch.
  • Coconut scrapings - 2 tbsp.
  • Ghee - 1 tsp.

Method To Make Fenugreek Seeds Thambuli.

  • Heat a kadai or a pan with ghee in it.
  • Add Fenugreek seeds and saute on a medium heat for a minute.
  •  Add red chillis, jeera seeds and peppercorns and fry for another minute.
  • Switch off the flame and mix in the coconut scrapings.
  • Take a mixer jar and transfer the fried ingredients into it.
  • Add salt, asafoetida and  1 / 4 cup of buttermilk into it.
  • Grind the ingredients into a smooth paste.
  • Transfer it into another serving bowl.
  • Add the remaining buttermilk and dilute the thambuli.

Your healthy and bitter menthe thambuli is ready to be  served!!!

KitchenMasti Points.

  1. See to it that the buttermilk is a little sour, but not in excess.
  2. You can reduce half the quantity of buttermilk and substitute the remaining half with water.
  3. Since you have already fried the seeds in ghee, there is no need to add any seasoning but if desire, you can opt for it. In this recipe I have not added any seasonings.
