Broken Rice Upma / Akki Tari Uppittu Recipe

Bored with regular rava upma ? wanna try a new one ? Then, here goes another recipe of upma made out of broken rice otherwise known as rice rava. It is an ideal breakfast menu, rich in carbohydrates, which is very vital for the morning breakfast.You can make this upma more nutritious by adding some green veggies like fresh green peas or capsicum, there by making it even more tasty. Here, in this recipe, you have to prepare broken rice in advance and the remaining process is quite simple.

How To Prepare Broken Rice Upma / Akki Tari Uppittu.


The time consumed to prepare this is around 20 minutes but you have to wash and dry the rice previous day itself..

Ingredients For Broken Rice Upma.


  • Raw rice - 1 cup.
  • Water - 3 1 / 2 cups.
  • Salt - as required.
  • Green chillis - 4.
  • Curry leaves - 1 string.
  • Coriander leaves - 3 sprigs.
  • Oil - 3 tbsp.
  • Ginger - 1 inch.
  • Lemon juice - 1 tbsp.
  • Coconut Scrapings - 1 / 4 cup.

For seasoning.


  • Broken red chilli - 1.
  • Urad dal ( black gram ) - 1 tsp.
  • Mustard seeds - 1 / 2 tsp

Method To Make Broken Rice Upma.


  • First and foremost, wash the rice thoroughly and dry it under the fan for around 3 to 4 hours till the moist is completely evaporated or you can even sun dry it.
  • Now, take a dry grinder and add the rice in small batches and run the mixer till the rice is coarsely powdered like that of rava consistency. Keep it aside.
  • Heat the required quantity of water in a vessel.
  • Now heat a deep pan or kadai with oil in it.
  • Add the seasoning ingredients, that is, broken red chilli, urad dal, mustard seeds and curry leaves in it.
  • When the oil starts spluttering, add the chopped green chillis and ginger chopped in julienne.
  • Now add the powdered rice and mix it with the seasoning and carry on mixing so that the mixture does not get charred.
  • Meanwhile, when the water starts boiling, transfer it to the pan with the rice and mix it well so that no lumps are formed.
  • Add salt and mix it once again.
  • Allow it to boil for around 3 minutes till the mixture thickens.
  • Add lemon juice,  chopped coriander leaves and grated coconut.
  • Mix it well and switch off the flame.

Your nutritious and tasty broken rice upma is ready to be served.!!!

  1. You can add ghee while serving the upma for a more richer taste.
  2. Instead of preparing rice rava at home, you can also use idli rice rava which is easily available in the market.
