Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan Recipe

Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan is a gravy recipe which goes on well with chapathi, naan, puri and so on. Even though the name itself suggests mirchi ( chilli ), it is actually not hot but is rather on the spicier side. Here, we use the long variety of chilli which is usually used to prepare mirchi bonda (fritters)  that are light green in color. Here, a gravy is prepared and fried chillis are mixed in the gravy.

How To Prepare Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan .

The time taken to prepare this dish is around 30 minutes and the quantity is enough for 4 servings.

Ingredients For Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan 


  • Green long chillis - 8.
  • Onions - 2.
  • Tomatoes - 4.
  • Coriander seeds ( dhania ) - 1 tbsp.
  • Jeera seeds ( cumin seeds ) - 1/2 tbsp.
  • Salt - as required.
  • Ginger - garlic paste - 1 tbsp.
  • Groundnuts - 1 tbsp.
  • Coconut scrapings - 1 tbsp.
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tbsp.
  • Garam Masala powder - 1 tsp.
  • Bay leaf - 1 
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp.
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp.
  • Amchur powder ( Mango Powder ) - 1/2 tsp.
  • Fresh cream - 1 tbsp.
  • Coriander leaves - 2 sprigs.
  • Butter - 1 tbsp



Method To Make Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan.


  • Wash the green chillis and make a slit in the middle of the chilli.
  • Deseed the chillis with the help of a knife.
  • Heat a non stick pan with oil in it and shallow fry the chillis till it looses it color. Keep it aside.
  • Heat another pan with 3 tsp of oil in it.
  • Add groundnuts and fry for 2 minutes.
  • Now add onions, tomatoes, bay leaf, coconut scrapings and sesame seeds and fry for around 2 minutes.
  • Later on, add coriander seeds and jeera seeds and saute for 1 minute and switch off the flame. Allow it to cool.
  • Grind the fried ingredients in a mixer jar until it reaches a smooth consistency by adding water.
  • Heat a pan with 1 tbsp of butter in it.
  • Add the ground items into the pan in a medium flame.
  • Fry for 1 minute.
  • Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, amchur powder, ginger garlic paste, and salt in it.
  • Fry for 1 minute.
  • Finally add fresh cream and chopped coriander leaves for garnishing the curry.
  • Add the shallow fried green chillis to the gravy and mix it well

Your spicy and tasty Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan is ready to be served.!!!

Kitchen Masti Points.


  1. Remove the bay leaf before grinding the ingredients.
  2. You can even deep fry the chillis if you are not calorie conscious. 
  3. If you prefer the gravy to be very spicy, then you need not deseed the green chillis.
  4. Not all variety of long green chillis are suitable for this gravy, but only that are light green in color should be selected.
