Rajma Masala Curry / Red Kidney Beans Curry

Red kidney beans otherwise known as Rajma, is a great source of protein and is low in glycemic index. It is an excellent source of energy. Since the cereal is very hard, you will have to soak it for at least 8 hours before cooking it. Using this rajma, you can prepare varieties of curries. Rajma Chawal is something that is quite famous all over India. Today I am posting this rajma gravy which goes on well with chapatirice and so on.

How To Prepare Rajma Masala.

Firstly, you will have to soak the rajma for around 8 hours and then, you will have to boil it in the cooker for 5 - 6 whistles.

Ingredients For Rajma Masala Curry.


  • Rajma - 1 cup.
  • Onion - 2 .
  • Tomatoes - 3.
  • Green chillies - 4.
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp.
  • Jeera powder ( cumin powder ) - 1 / 2 tsp
  • Salt - as required.
  • Ginger Garlic paste - 1 tsp.
  • Garam masala powder - 1 tsp. 
  • Coriander leaves - a few sprigs.
  • Coriander powder ( dhania powder) - 1 / 2 tsp.
  • Lemon juice - 1 tsp.
  • Oil - 1 tbsp.
  • Butter - 1 tbsp
  • Kasuri methi ( dried fenugreek leaves) - 1 tsp.

Method To Make Rajma curry.


  • Firstly, wash the Rajma and soak it for around 8 hours.
  • Boil it in the pressure cooker until 4 - 5 whistles and then keep it aside.
  • Meanwhile, heat a pan with oil and 1 tbsp of butter in it.
  • Add chopped onions and fry it in medium flame till it turns translucent.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, slit green chillis and fry it till the tomatoes turns mushy.
  • Now add salt, red chilli powder, jeera powder, dhania powder and garam masala powder.
  • Fry for around 3 minutes till the raw smell disappears.
  • Later on, add ginger garlic paste and stir it gently.
  • Finally, add the boiled Rajma and mash it lightly with a ladle.
  • Now add the lime juice and garnish it with the chopped coriander leaves.

Your lip smacking curry is ready to be served.!!!

Kitchen Masti Points.


  1. You can add 2 tbsp of cashew nut paste to give a richer taste to the curry.
  2. You can even add 1 tbsp of onion paste for a thicker gravy.
  3. For an unique taste, you can add 1 tbsp of tomato ketchup to the gravy.
  4. 1 tbsp of cream can be added while garnishing the gravy.
