Bread Masala (Bread Upma) Recipe

Bread masala ( Bread Upma ) is one such dish which can be easily be prepared.It is very yummy to taste also. You can ideally pack this for tiffin box too,as lunch. During the busy wee hours in the morning, it is  very common in many houses to prepare  the bread for breakfast. Lots of recipes can be prepared from the bread. In western countries it is very common to have bread butter in the mornings. Bread is mainly made out of maida ( all purpose flour) which is not that good for health, but now you get varieties of  brown breads in the markets which are made out of wheat. Usually brown bread is preferred by health conscious people and dietitians . But any ways bread, once in a while , and not every now and then since is preferable because daily intake of bread may lead to constipation.

How To Prepare Bread Masala ( Bread Upma)

It takes around twenty minutes to prepare this dish. The quantity I am preparing here serves about three persons.

Ingredients For Bread Masala. (Bread Upma)


  • Sandwich Bread - 1 packet
  • Onions - 4 big sized
  • Tomatoes - 2 big sized
  • Green chillies - 1
  • Garam masala - 2 tsp
  • Red chillie powder -1 tsp
  • Turmeric - half tsp
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Corionder leaves -3 - 4 strings
  • Red chillies ( byadige ) -1
  • Urad dal ( black gram ) -1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Bengal gram dal (Chana Dal) - 1 tsp

Method To Prepare Bread Masala ( Bread Upma )


  • First and foremost, chop the onions and tomatoes finely in to small pieces.
  • Cut the bread into small pieces
  • Heat a pan with oil in it.
  • Add red chillies,  broken into pieces,  urad (black gram), mustard seeds and chana Dal ( Bengal Gram Dal)
  • When it starts to splutter add chopped onions and tomatoes.
  • Add salt red chilli powder, and garam masala powder 
  • Mix it properly
  • Let it get fried for 2 - 3 minutes
  • Now add bread pieces into the pan and mix it well.
  • If necessary sprinkle little water so that it will get blended well.
  • Finally add sugar and garnish with coriander leaves
Your Bread Masala or Bread Upma is ready to be served. !!!

Kitchen Masti Points


  1. You can omit Garam Masala if you don't like it.
  2. In order to call Bread Masala as Bread Upma , you can Omit red chilli powder
  3. You can add turmeric powder if you wish.
  4. Here in this recipe, I have used white bread but you can also use brown bread.
  5. You can also add the fried cashew nut pieces for a richer taste.
  6. As far as possible, avoid using milk breads and sweet breads.
  7. You can also make this bread masala out of Pav Breads.
