Rava Upma Recipe ( Khara Bath )

Rava (Semolina) Upma or Sooji Upma ( suji in Hindi ) is traditionally known as Uppittu or Khara bath in Kannada. Basically, it is a South Indian Breakfast item but now, the rava upma recipe is becoming famous all over the world. Some companies have also started manufacturing instant rava upma packets. The person who won the last year's Australian Chef competition, prepared none other than our own Upma Dish, with some variations of the traditional recipe for upma. It hardly takes few minutes to prepare upma.
It is a common scenario in most of the houses in South India to prepare upma as a morning breakfast.
Restaurants serve Upma with different variations like adding vegetables to it and some spices along with it to give some extra flavors to it and there by the whole scenario of the Upma gets a very interesting twist.
So, let me take this opportunity to share the sooji upma recipe.

It is extremely easy to learn How to make upma. This simple, easy and quick upma recipe would hardly take 30 minutes of your time

Ingredients For Rava Upma

  • Medium Rava ( Semolina ) - 1 cup
  • Coconut Oil  - 1 / 2 cup
  • Bengal Gram Dal - 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal ( Black Gram ) - 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds- 1 tsp
  • Green Chilli  - 4 - 5
  • Onions - 1
  • Kadipatta ( curry leaves ) -  A few
  • Red Chilli - 1 ( broken into pieces )
  • Coriander Leaves - For decoration
  • Coconut Scrapings - 1 / 2 cup
  • Lemon Juice - 2 tsp
  • Salt - 2 tsp
  • Ginger - 1 / 4 inch

Method To  Make Rava Upma


  • Heat a Pan with 3 to 4 tsp of coconut oil. When heated, add broken red chiliis, Bengal Gram Dal,urad dal ( Black Gram ) , mustard seeds and some kadipatta ( curry leaves).
  • Add Green Chillis and onions chopped.
  • Add 1 Cup of Rava (Semolina )  and fry.See to it that it does not get over roasted. So keep stirring it frequently.
  • Meanwhile, in another vessel , boil three cups of water simultaneously.
  • When the Rava slightly changes its color , add the boiling water over the rava mixture and turn the Gas knob to minimum flame.
  • Add Salt
  • Cover it with the lid and let the rava mixture boil for around 5 minutes till the water gets evaporated.
  • Now, Add coconut oil, coconut scrapings and lemon juice.
  • Mix properly and add coriander leaves.
  • Take a small bowl full of upma and turn it upside down over the plate and serve.
Upma Rava is now ready to be served !!!

Kitchen Masti Points


  1. You can also add any other oil or Ghee instead of coconut oil
  2. Some people eat this upma along with curds also. It is a different combination. Try it out if you like.
  3. Adding little Garam Masala spices to the rava ( semolina) mix would make rava upma , a masala upma.
  4. In this recipe I have not added tomato since nobody prefers it in my house, but I have seen people who include tomato as an ingredient as well.
  5. In my opinion, the best combination along with Rava upma is coconut chutney and filter coffee
  6. In restaurants, probably you would have heard about a dish called Chow Chow Bath. It is nothing but a combination of Rava Upma and Rava Kesari Bath
