Onion chutney Recipe

Onion chutney is one of the spiciest chutnies which goes on well with dosas, idli, kadubu, and many other dishes. It enhances the taste of the dish. So it is popular among many chat items. Some people do not like it because of its pungent smell. But at the same time, it has many health benefits also. It contains lots of vitamin-C. Therefore it is regarded as anti-inflammatory. It helps in preventing the heart strokes. Its juice is used for curing coughs.

How To Make Onion chutney

It takes only ten minutes of your time.


Ingredients For Onion Chutney


  • Onion - 1 big sized 
  • Coconut scrapings - 1 small cup
  • Red chillies (byadige chillies) - 5
  • Green chillies - 2
  • Urad dal (black gram) - 3 tsp
  • Asafoetida - A small pinch
  • Salt - half tsp
  • Tamarind juice - 1 spoon
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 3 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - A few strings


How To Make Onion Chutney



  • Heat a pan
  • Add two tsp of oil
  • Add urad dal (black gram) , byadige chilli (red chilli),chopped onions and curry leaves into it.
  • Fry lightly till the onion just changes its color.
  • Let it cool down for a minute or so.
  • Now, Take a mixer jar.
  • Add the fried items into it.also add the coconut scrapings,salt asafoetida and tamarind juice into it.
  • Now, add one fourth cup of water and run the mixer till the mixture is blended to a smooth consistency.
  • Transfer it to a bowl.
  • Prepare a tadka (seasoning),  that is, heat a small pan and add two tsp of oil. Now add one tsp of urad(black gram) dal,one broken red chilli,mustard seeds and a few curry leaves. When it starts spluttering, transfer it to the grounded onion mixture .

Your onion mixture is now ready to be served.!!!

Kitchen Masti Points



  1. Instead of red chilli(byadige chilli),you can use only green chillies while grinding.
  2. In place of fried onions, you can use raw onions also while grinding.
  3. If you happened to use raw onions, then add a few coriander leaves while grinding.
  4. You can eat this along with paddu/guliappa and ragi dosa or any other dosa for that matter.
  5. You can use this onion chutney as a sandwich spread also.
